At any time of the year, parties are great! Yet the basics of staying safe are something that you can't afford to forget.
Unfortunately, although the vast majority of partygoers and the public are decent responsible people, there may be the occasional one that is not. So keep in mind a few basic common-sense precautions:
Don't leave your personal valuables unattended in a party where there are people present that you do not know and trust;
- Don't leave your drinks unattended or accept drinks from people you hardly know - males should not make the mistake of assuming this is just a risk for females and females should not assume that only males are capable of serious crime and misbehaviour in this area;
- Drink moderately - both for your health and your personal security;
- If possible, try to travel to and from the party with trusted and known friends;
- If using taxis, try to use only licensed vehicles pre-booked from a trusted company and try to avoid being the last one to be ‘dropped off' - always exit with a friend or friends;
- If you have to use a taxi alone, make sure that you either call someone on your mobile or tell someone where you're parting from the taxi number and registration number of the vehicle you're boarding - make sure the driver knows you have done so;
- Try to avoid controversial subjects of discussion or venting your views aggressively;
- Consider carrying a personal attack alarm;
- Avoid going off into quiet areas of the building with strangers;
- Leaving aside legal and health considerations, avoid drug use - they can modify your behaviour and badly affect your judgement;
- However provoked you are, avoid violence and confrontation as alcohol can turn a minor incident into a major problem in just a few seconds;
- Make sure you have sufficient money on you to get home by taxi if necessary - keeping an emergency 20 pound note in your shoe could prove a lifesaver if your other funds are stolen etc;
- Don't walk home alone in the dark or through quiet deserted areas at any time.
