Straight out of the box, the Galaxy S9 is one of the best phones going. Read on to find out what you can do to squeeze even even more goodness out of your device:

General tips

Improve battery life

One of the best ways to increase the length of time between charges is Power saving mode. This feature allows you to limit some of the background functions in exchange for sweet, precious percentages. Simple but effective. To switch it on:

- Go to Settings > Device Maintenance > Battery
- Tap either MID or MAX power saving setting

You can also try reducing the screen resolution. The S9 defaults to FHD+ mode (2220 x 1080 pixels) which takes up more energy and doesn’t look much better than the basic HD+ setting (1480 x 720). To switch to low-res:

- Go to settings > Display > Screen Resolution
- Select FHD+

Boost speaker volume

The Galaxy S9 has a powerful speaker, but sometimes, you need to crank it up to 11 (for example, when you hold an impromptu karaoke-party for friends and preferred customers).

If you want to increase the volume of your speakers by 25%, you can enable Dolby Atmos - which also adds depth and a surround-sound-feel. Don’t mind if I do!

To switch it on:

- Go to settings > go down to Sounds and vibration
- Go to Sound quality and effects - Toggle Dolby Atmos on

Add more apps to your homescreen

If you’re a bit of an app hoarder, it can become tedious swiping through multiple pages of icons to find the one you’re looking for.

To make sure everything important is close to hand, you can increase the number of slots available in the grid on your homescreen:

- Go to Settings > Display
- Tap on Home Screen and select Home Screen Grid
- Select from the grid size options (4x5, 4x6, 5x5 or 5x6)

Camera tips

Enable Quick Camera Launch

The camera on the Galaxy S9 is an absolute beaut – however, it’s easy to miss photo opportunities if you’re fumbling around, trying to unlock it.

Quick Camera Launch helps you channel the spirit of an old-West gunslinger, and you don’t even have to grow a moustache. Result! To enable it, go to:

- Settings > Advanced features
- Go down to Quick launch Camera and toggle it on
- Then, all you need to do is double tap the power button when you want to take a photo. Easy peasy.

Add grid-lines to the camera

Positioning is one of the key things you need to consider when taking photos, and without any on-screen guidance it can be hard to judge.

Alas, the camera-grid feature on the Samsung Galaxy S9 can help you line things up perfectly (disclaimer: This is not a silver bullet. Your auntie June may still accuse you of taking photos from unflattering angles). To switch it on:

- Open the camera app
- Click on the ‘settings’ cog on the top right
- Go down to the grid lines option and tap 3x3

Blur the background and emphasise the person/object

If you want to make someone or something in the foreground pop, the Selective Focus (S9) and Live Focus (S9+) modes allow you to create a depth-of-field background blur.

Very useful for portrait-style photos of friends, or plates of disconcertingly beautiful food. To try it out:

- Open the camera app
- Swipe right and select either Selective Focus or Live Focus
- Follow the on-screen instructions
